How to Adopt a Cat in the USA
Your Complete Guide to Cat Adoption!!
I adopted my first cat in the USA back in 2020. His name is Marlo and he’s a 2-year-old tabby. It was one of the best choices I ever made! But you know, the adoption process wasn’t as simple as I thought at first. I learned so much during that time— I wish I had figured it out sooner.
In this guide, I’ll share all the things you need to know about adopting a cat in the USA. Whether it’s your first pet or you’re looking to add another furry friend to your family, this guide is here to help you get started.
Before You Adopt: Key Questions to Ask Yourself
Adopting a cat is a Big responsibility! So before jumping into it, think about these important questions:
Are you mentally & emotionally ready? Cats can live up to 15-20 years. Wow!
Do you have enough time & energy? They need attention and sometimes lots of cuddles.
Do you want a kitten or an adult cat? Kittens can be quite hyper, while older cats might be more chill.
Are you often away from home? You’ll need a plan for who will care for your cat when you’re traveling.
Is your budget ready? Food, vet visits, & supplies can get pricey.
Can you make time for their daily needs? Feeding and cleaning the litter box will become part of your day!
If you’ve thought about these questions & still feel good about it, then let’s keep going!
Where to Adopt a Cat in the USA
There are plenty of places in the USA where you can adopt cats looking for homes. Here are some common options:
Local Animal Shelters – These city-run places take in stray or surrendered cats. They often help with necessary vet care too, like vaccinations and spaying/neutering.
Private Rescue Organizations – These are non-profits focused on rescuing cats. Some may specialize in specific breeds or cats with special needs.
Online Adoption Platforms – Websites like Petfinder and Adopt-a-Pet let you see cats up for adoption from various shelters & rescues nationwide.
Humane Societies – Lots of Humane Societies around the USA also have cats ready for adoption.
The Adoption Process
Fill Out an Application
Most shelters ask you to fill out an adoption application. It’s usually online, but some might use paper forms too.
What they ask usually includes:
Your basic contact info.
Details about the living situation (like renting or owning & if pets are allowed).
Whether you have other pets at home.
How much time do you spend away each day?
If there are kids in your home.
This helps them match you with a cat that fits into your lifestyle.
Home Check
Some organizations do home checks to see if your place is safe for a cat. Don’t worry—this isn’t about judging! It’s for finding a good fit for both you & the cat. They’ll check things like window safety & if there’s a cozy spot for the kitty.
Meet & Greet
After your application is approved and any checks (if needed) are done, it’s time to meet some cats! Take your time; choose wisely—it’s about finding a lifelong buddy!
Costs of Adopting a Cat in the USA
Adoption fees vary based on where you go. Generally, they cover initial vaccinations, microchipping, and spaying/neutering. You might pay between $50 and $150.
For Marlo, I paid $75. That covered his vaccines and neutering. Some rescues even give starter kits with some basic supplies!
Finding the Right Cat for You
Choosing the right cat is super important! Think carefully about what works best for you:
Indoor or Outdoor? – Do you have a safe outdoor space or will the kitty stay inside?
Age? – Kittens can be fun but very active; older cats may be calmer and independent.
Other Pets? – If you already have pets, think about how they might react!
Allergies? – Make sure nobody at home has allergies to cat dander!
